Arup provided project management and engineering advice from the early feasibility stages of a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal on a 104 hectare site located on the Shannon Estuary in the west of Ireland.
We prepared the site selection report for the proposed terminal, which required access to deep water to cater for Q-Max LNG tankers and proximity to gas and electricity transmission infrastructure.
The scope of services included the development of the masterplan for the site, civil infrastructure, all-site investigation and survey work (metocean, geotechnical, archaeological and environmental), permitting and consenting, and procurement advice.
Arup prepared the Environmental Impact Statement for the project and managed the planning application, including public hearings and submissions.
The project successfully received planning permission in 2008 – the first private development to receive planning permission under the new Strategic Infrastructure Development legislation.
In 2009, we were responsible for obtaining planning permission for an associated 26km gas grid connection pipeline. The terminal was re-designed in 2012 to incorporate a 500MW high-efficiency Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant. Arup also prepared the Environmental Impact Statement and successful planning application for this development.
