Shigu River eco-landscape, Nanjing

Creating diverse waterfront recreational experiences

The Shigu River, connecting two major lakes in Nanjing, is an exclusive water corridor of both strategic and ecological importance for the city.

In the next decade, along with China’s new urban development, the 9km corridor will become another core urban waterfront open space.

Arup provided a comprehensive landscape design scheme to facilitate the transformation. Our vision is to create diverse waterfront recreational experiences for this river, with a strong focus on sustainability.

Project Summary

2 major lakes in Nanjing connected by Shigu River

9km corridor will become another core urban waterfront open space.

In the design scheme we integrated functions of flood risk management, waterfront landscape, cultural tourism, recreation and eco-education.

We also identified four focal development nodes along the river corridor to enhance the city’s image and attract people to the riverside.

A design framework has been developed to restore a local village, allowing residents to live by the river and maintain the identity and distinctive features of the river.
