Technik Floor was developed as a solution for building projects requiring fast, precise monolithic floor installations.
Developed by Arup with partners Grants and Lindner for property developer Stanhope, the system substantially reduces the 4-8 week drying time and risk associated with traditional wet screed installations.
Technik’s sustainability, speed of installation and fitting tolerance led airport operator BAA to choose it as their preferred flooring solution.
Over 65,000m2 of Technik flooring has already been installed on various UK projects, including Heathrow Terminal 5C and T2B, Ropemaker Place, Central St Giles and More London.
Off-site assembly
The 95% recycled substrate floor panels are pre-assembled with the floor finish in a factory environment, achieving precise tolerances. These panels are supported by steel pedestals to form a raised floor, with interlocking bonded tongue-and-groove panel joints enabling the boards to behave as one structure.
This process means that work progresses quickly on site. The strong, level floor is ready to be walked on in just 24 hours. The open void between the Technik floor and slab can function as an air plenum and allow power and data access.

Strong, level, flexible
The result is a very strong, level surface which is difficult to achieve in traditionally installed screed flooring. This solution gives confidence in program times and clear supplier responsibility. Technik can accommodate a range of floor finishes, such as stone, porcelain, linoleum, carpet and timber parquet.
Stanhope required a floor system that resolved the drying, movement and weight problems associated with many stone on screed installations. Arup and Grants realised they needed a prefabricated, modular stone flooring system that behaved as a single-surface layer, so they engaged Lindner AG to help develop the Technik Floor.
Environmental performance
The Technik floor panel substrate contains 95% recycled material content, consisting of calcium sulphate and recycled paper.
Arup carried out a lifecycle assessment of the Technik Floor installed at Heathrow Airport, in comparison with traditional tile on screed bed flooring systems. The results showed that Technik has the lowest whole lifecycle CO2 and the lowest whole lifecycle cost.
A carbon saving of 43% over screed was calculated for the manufacture, delivery and installation of the floor, and a saving of 38% was calculated for the complete lifecycle.
The assessment reinforces the environmental as well as commercial advantages of the Technik system.
