The masterplan prepares an innovative guide to the installation of valuable green infrastructure throughout The Crown Estate’s London portfolio. This ensures that The Crown Estate takes a long term approach to integrating green infrastructure in new and existing developments.
Key goals
In addition to meeting an objective to enhance ecology and biodiversity, key drivers of the project included improvement to the local environment, and to the health and wellbeing of tenants and visitors, in turn contributing to the value of The Crown Estate portfolio.
Development of the corridor – which we defined as 100m² or greater of ecologically valuable green space with a maximum separation of 100m – is to be measured against key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs include total established green space, increases in species type as well as tenant satisfaction.
Looking forward
Building on this work, Arup worked with The Crown Estate to create ‘Wild West End’; a partnership with surrounding landowners (The Crown Estate, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, The Portman Estate, Shaftesbury and Howard de Walden), to create a network of green spaces in the West End. The partnership is supported by the Greater London Authority and the London Wildlife Trust. We have an ongoing role to steer and facilitate the partnership as technical partner of Wild West End, providing strategic direction and technical support.
