New surgery and medical office building geared towards patients

Opening in the Spring of 2012, UCLA Health System’s Outpatient Surgery and Medical Building is a 50,000ft2 structure distributed over three floors. The new building is a vital addition to UCLA’s ever-growing Santa Monica, CA campus.

The three floors are geared towards patients, offering different levels of care. Some of the highlights include state of the art linear accelerator radiation therapy, eight fully equipped operating rooms to perform a wide range of outpatient surgical procedures, and clinical offices for the UCLA Department of Medicine.

The building was designed to be in tune with local natural resources in order to promote healing and increase staff productivity. To achieve this, the façade design allows for solar control by maximising daylight and passive solar heating. The drought tolerant gardens increase views and promote healing, while the urban open space can be used by both patients and the public.

Other key project features include a 100kW rooftop photovoltaic system and the first automated “robot” parking system on the West Coast which can accommodate the same number of cars as a conventional parking structure but in a fraction of the space and with less lighting and ventilation requirements.

Arup provided sustainable design and LEED consulting throughout the project, as well as early stage façade and acoustic consulting. We also assisted the project through the entitlement stage where the early sustainability strategy was key to the project progressing.
