Waste planning and advisory services for the North London Waste Authority

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is one of the largest waste disposal authorities in the UK, responsible for the management of municipal solid waste generated by the London Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.

The NLWA has a growing demand for new waste facilities and Arup is advising on the development of new waste handling and treatment sites and the procurement of a long-term PFI waste service contract. The contract must provide residents with value for money, be consistent with the national strategy for achieving recycling and composting targets and enable the recovery of residual waste that cannot be recycled or composted.

Arup’s brief is wide ranging and includes advice on planning and environmental issues for site selection, third party developer interface, preparation of planning applications and preparation of documents to support the Authority’s application for government PFI credits needed to undertake the procurement of the new waste management infrastructure.

Arup is currently assisting the Authority on the selection of sites for acquisition and scoping planning applications for major residual waste facilities, leading to the preparation and submission of planning applications later in 2009.
