Multi-level 'canyon' combining nature with retail

Interwoven with a 'basket-weave' circulation plan and designed as a lively, multi-level canyon, Zlote Tarasy combines nature with retail and entertainment.

Arup provided structural, acoustic, geotechnicalcivil and traffic engineering design, pedestrian modelling, sustainability and building physics services for the project.

Simple engineering for a complex roof

The centre of Zlote Tarasy is protected from Warsaw's weather by a 10,500m² free-form glass roof which, unique in its shape and construction, provided the greatest design challenge for Arup.

The use of Arup software and a common computer model of the roof was of huge benefit, allowing the project team (based in five countries) to work together resolve complexities quickly.

Environment and sustainability

Glass creates an 'outdoor' ambience, while heating and cooling allows it to remain comfortable throughout the harshest of Polish winters. As part of an environmental analysis we completed studies of internal air temperatures for both summer and winter conditions. The summer study highlighted the interaction between the space and external environment, particularly the influence of solar gains.

Arup also carried out SPeAR® (Sustainable Project Appraisal Routine) assessments at key stages of the project, successfully demonstrating how sustainability can be integrated into a project – positively affecting lighting, landscaping and cladding design.

Connected public spaces

With an underground connection to the adjoining train station and connections to streetscapes on the upper levels of the complex, the park exposes Zlote Tarasy's interior to the street, reconnecting the surrounding public spaces.

The project was awarded 'Best of Show' as well as 'Best Large Retail Development Scheme' at the 2005 Plaza Retail Future Projects Awards for MAPIC. In 2006 the development also won the Architectural Review MIPIM Future Project Award.
