Arup, in collaboration with joint venture design partners Braaksma & Roos and Civic Architects, has completed the detailed design for the transformation of Stadstheater Arnhem. The project reimagines the historic theatre as a sustainable and future-oriented cultural landmark in the city’s heart.

The design team carefully shaped both the building’s exterior and interior to respect the monument’s historical significance while introducing new functions. The renewed Stadstheater will preserve the architectural character of the original building, including its historic theatre hall with 719 seats and connected foyers, which will be enhanced with two new balconies. In addition, a brand-new multipurpose theatre space with standing capacity for up to 650 people will be added, along with a studio, grand foyer, and various supporting facilities.

Besides designing a high performing and functional theatre, the design is energy efficient and fitted with modern technologies such as ground storage heating and cooling or PV panels on the roof. The integration with the surrounding landscape, known as the Stadsoase, has been seamlessly designed in collaboration with the municipality. This is clearly visible in the green living façades and the use of biobased materials.

“We have created a sustainable and future-oriented design that respects the historical value of the site while making room for new cultural and social functions." says the Design team (Arup, Braaksma & Roos, Civic Architects)

The project aligns with the city’s broader vision for a greener, more inclusive Arnhem. By enhancing accessibility, improving energy performance, and embedding circular design principles, the new Stadstheater sets a benchmark for cultural infrastructure in the Netherlands.

Arup continues to support the project by providing integrated engineering and sustainability consultancy, including structural, building services, acoustics, fire safety, building physics, architectural lighting, and NOx consultancy. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that the theatre will remain a cherished and high-performing space for generations to come.

Expected to open in 2028, the new Stadstheater Arnhem will be a place where culture, heritage and climate ambition come together - right in the heart of the city.
