The effects of climate change and extreme weather often have an outsized impact on the most vulnerable communities. When we develop natural solutions to these issues, there is an opportunity to address this uneven impact, by putting women and marginalised groups at the heart of nature-based solutions (NbS).

Gender-responsive NbS are a way to address these intertwined issues. Women are often key ‘gatekeepers’ of community-led climate and biodiversity action and so gender-responsive NbS can enhance climate and ecological resilience, promote biodiversity restoration and promote women's economic empowerment simultaneously. The goal is to prioritise nature-based solutions that are more inclusive, equitable and effective, strengthening resilience as communities tackle these problems.

Working with Social Development Direct, in partnership with the Green Growth Working Group (GGWG) of the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED), we have developed a toolkit that provides practical guidance on how to design, deliver, and manage gender-responsive NbS. Organised into four sections, the toolkit contains tools and case studies to support the implementation of policies, processes, and practices that recognise the roles of women and marginalised groups in advancing climate resilience and biodiversity restoration in both urban and rural settings.

This new toolkit aims to fill a key gap in existing knowledge and practice. We want to collaborate with practitioners, policymakers, the private sector, women-led enterprises, and donors who are ready to pilot these approaches.
