Further to a letter of intent signed in 2008 by Fiat and the Serbian Government, the Zastava Automobiles car manufacturing plant located in Kragujevac, Serbia – which has been operational since the 1950s – has started undergoing significant refurbishment works in order to become a dedicated Fiat production site.
Since April 2010 Arup has been involved in the project working for Idest, a Turin-based engineering consultancy firm, in developing multidisciplinary design solutions for the civil refurbishment works.
The services Arup is providing from offices in Italy and Serbia include architectural, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical and public health design as well as advising on permit-related issues and on local regulatory matters.
The civil refurbishment works mainly consist of the elevation of selected parts of the existing roof structure to host state-of-the-art car production lines, structural strengthening works to comply with the local construction code for a seismic area as well as façades and MEP provisions consistent with the high corporate standards of the Fiat Group.
The five main process-related buildings of the car manufacturing plant occupy an area of approximately 220,000m2 and – when fully operational – will yield a predicted production of some 200,000 cars per year.
Our services
Working closely with our clients and architects, we have delivered different kinds of services throughout various project stages.
Arup team provided structural design in 3D, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical and public health design, as well as advice on permit-related issues and on local regulatory issues.
We have also delivered some specialized services such as seismic retrofit design, silos farm base design, fluid tank design, pipe-rack bridge design, canopy design etc.
Finally, we have also advised the client on obtaining necessary permits in Serbia, as well as on local regulatory matters.
