Tanja is Global Research Leader at Arup. She fosters innovation by bringing together more than 1,000 colleagues and 200 external partners each year to shape a better world through research.
With a background in co-design and international development, Tanja is a deeply committed to transdisciplinary research – drawing together expertise from diverse disciplines and contexts to tackle complex, real-world challenges. This has inspired her to introduce a challenge-led approach to Arup’s research programme.
Tanja has worked in 17 countries across four continents, being inspired by local approaches to design, research, and innovation in each place. She holds a PhD in Sustainable Futures for her research into urban sanitation governance in Indonesia and has won multiple awards recognising her impactful design and research practice, including for her work as a science communicator – making complex research accessible and engaging through games, workshops, and even comedy.
