Arup and Equatic partner to advance world's first large-scale ocean carbon removal facility
Arup is providing technical and advisory services to support Equatic in scaling its technology, identifying optimal deployment locations, and designing for seamless implementation.

Aktualisiert: 11th Dezember 2024
Equatic, an emerging leader in the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) space, has developed an innovative electrolytic process for atmospheric carbon dioxide removal that leverages the size and scale of the oceans. With a CDR process contained within the processing plant, their patented technology accelerates the ocean’s existing ability to absorb and permanently store large amounts of carbon while simultaneously producing carbon-negative hydrogen.
Equatic is leveraging Arup’s global reach alongside broad technical disciplines and expertise to help scale their technology, understand where to deploy it, and design for implementation.
As Equatic embarks on their scale-up journey, Arup is supporting their pathway to global scale by providing technical and advisory services. Our collaboration includes leading site and infrastructure assessments, development of digital tools, planning and permitting advice, stakeholder management and governance, as well as other services. In addition to our consulting services, Dervilla Mitchell (former Deputy Chair of Arup Group) serves on Equatic’s Industry Advisory Board where she is contributing her expertise in sustainable engineering practices and experience.
Equatic is exploring suitable locations and partners globally building on their modular pilot plants in California and Singapore and their demonstration plant, which broke ground in Singapore in 2024. Their modular approach will enable the installation, operation, and maintenance of individual units to be staged and stacked, facilitating systematic, rapid expansion and efficient operations.
Once operational, Equatic’s next iteration – a fully commercial scale plant – will remove over 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce 3,600 tons of green hydrogen per year, enabling Equatic to achieve CDR at less than $100 per ton by 2030.
Equatic ultimately has an ambition to reduce emissions at gigaton-scale globally to help avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
With a focus on sustainability, Arup is proud to deliver a suite of engineering services to help scale Equatic’s innovative technology, which aims to reduce emissions at an impactful pace to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
