The Hong Kong government planned a cycle track network connecting two sections: Tsuen Wan-Tuen Mun and Tuen Mun-Ma On Shan. The aim was to improve connectivity and enhance the recreational value of the cycle tracks in the New Territories. The track needed to incorporate landscaped sitting-out areas, refreshment kiosks, water-based facilities and tourist information kiosks.
Arup undertook a study of the Tsuen Wan-Tuen Mun section to recommend a proposed route and supporting facilities. The team considered traffic and planning, environment, cost, archaeology and landscape, as well as social, commercial and sustainability aspects. We designed a 22km-long, 4m-wide cycle track that runs along the coastline and incorporates a 4m-wide footway and a 2m-wide planter.
Supporting facilities including landscaped sitting-out areas, refreshment kiosks, water-based facilities and tourist information kiosks enhance the recreational value and accessibility of the cycle track.
