King Power MahaNakhon, one of Bangkok’s tallest buildings, offers a mixed-use development spanning 150,000m2 with residences, retail spaces, a hotel, and an observatory situated 314m above ground.
The building’s most distinctive architectural feature is the pixellation that extends across the entire 77-storey tower. This striking design element not only enhances the visual appeal but also creates balconies, floating rooms, and public terraces on the retail levels.
Arup provided structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services up to the schematic design stage for the project, and then handed over to local Thai engineers to carry out the detailed design. Drawing upon our global experience in designing tall buildings, we developed a construction-led scheme that could be delivered by the local industry while preserving the project’s unique architectural vision.
In close collaboration with the architects, our structural engineers adjusted the form to achieve a solution that maximised the use of locally available concrete without compromising on the daring cantilevers of the original architectural concept.
Additionally, our building services engineers developed a coordinated, high-quality services solution that satisfied the operating needs of the various tenants.
