At Aberfan in October 1966 approximately 140,000 tons of material from a coal mining waste tip slipped and engulfed part of the village, killing 144 people. The National Coal Board has identified some 650 individual tips within its ownership in South Wales.
In our first article in this issue, Brian Corbett details the Letty Shenkin tips and considers their influence on the proposed housing development planned in Cwmbach.
