Arup in India

At 182m tall the Statue of Unity is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and the world’s tallest statue. Arup’s technical specialists, structural and geotechnical engineers worked with contractor Larsen & Toubro to bring sculptor Ram V. Suttar’s vision to life. Together we devised a structure capable of supporting a statue of this scale while being resilient, robust, and able withstand wind, seismic activity and a range of dynamic loading.

India’s railway stations are under pressure due to increasing demand and ageing infrastructure. To help address this, we were invited by the Ministry of Railways and the Rail Land Development Authority to support their station redevelopment programme. Following stakeholder consultation, we developed a modular design approach to accelerate construction, reduce costs, and improve the user experience through natural ventilation and lighting, clear wayfinding and one-way circulation to reduce congestion.

Through the Australia-India Water Security Initiative, Arup delivered technical assistance to support India’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 which promotes water circularity and resilience across the entire urban water cycle. Our team provided policy advice, technical expertise, and stakeholder coordination to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to help shape future urban water delivery across more than 4,700 Indian cities.

Arup is supporting the UK Government funded UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) in India. The programme focuses on three sectors: decarbonising and modernising the energy grid; climate-informed and data-driven urban planning and mobility; and developing a certification platform for scaling agroforestry. Alongside our partners, we are using our technical expertise to ensure the projects delivered under UK PACT align with India’s climate goals and net zero ambition.
