Arup has appointed Giles Thomas as Principal – APAC High Speed Rail Technical Director, further strengthening the firm’s high speed rail and major project expertise in the region and globally. Giles Thomas joins Arup in Sydney on 20 April 2026, bringing nearly four decades of experience delivering complex, city-shaping rail programs across the UK, Europe, Asia Pacific and the United States.
Giles has held senior leadership roles on some of the world’s most significant rail and transport infrastructure projects, including High Speed Two (HS2) in the United Kingdom and the £6 billion Thameslink Program. His career spans government, client, delivery partner and contractor roles, providing him with a rare end-to-end perspective on major program development, integration and delivery.
At Arup, Giles Thomas will play a key role in supporting governments and clients to shape and deliver complex transport programs that unlock long-term economic, social and environmental value for cities and regions.

During his career, Giles Thomas has led multidisciplinary teams of engineers, planners, architects and environmental specialists, and has been responsible for system-level integration, technical assurance, investment decision-making and performance improvement across major programs. He has also worked extensively within complex regulatory and governance environments, advising governments, regulators and senior decision-makers.
“Giles has consistently operated at the intersection of engineering excellence, commercial performance and public value,” McGowan said. “His leadership on globally significant projects will help our clients navigate complexity, manage risk and deliver infrastructure that genuinely reshapes cities and communities for the better.”
