Pilen is a striking 217 metre long viewing platform overlooking the emerging Fehmarnbelt tunnel between Denmark and Germany. Created to open up this landmark infrastructure project to the public, it offers an immersive window into construction in action while inspiring future engineers. Arup led the architectural vision and supported the client from early concept through to integrated design and delivery.
Shaped as a bold arrow pointing towards Germany, Pilen offers a unique vantage point on construction of the world’s longest immersed road and rail tunnel. Matching the 217-metre length of a tunnel segment, its timber deck and landscaped ramp rise 24 metres above sea level. Inspired by the coastal landscape, the fully accessible pathway leads visitors to sweeping views of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link, an 18km-long tunnel set to revolutionise transport between Scandinavia and continental Europe. Built from landfill and timber, incorporating local vegetation and designed for disassembly, it showcases low‑carbon alternatives to traditional tower structures.
Since opening in March 2025, the project has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors, quickly becoming a destination in its own right. Its impact is now recognised beyond the site too, with Pilen featured in LEGOLAND as a permanent part of their exhibition.
