Arup has carried out the consultancy and coordination of two leading sustainability seals for Madrid Nuevo Norte urban regeneration project, the first development to obtain both certificates in Europe.

Arup has worked with developer Distrito Castellana Norte to secure a Gold LEED for Communities Plan and Design pre-certification, as well as a provisional BREEAM ES Urbanismo 2020 certificate.

Driven by sustainability, Madrid Nuevo Norte is the largest mixed-use urban regeneration intervention in Europe. The two leading sustainability seals are proof of this inherent commitment to people, community, integration, and resilience.

Covering a total area of 230 hectares, this ambitious project seeks to bring to life a disused space formed by the track bundle leading to Chamartín station, regenerating the neighbourhood as a thriving residential and business area backed by an integrated public transport hub.

Directed by DCN, a team of sustainability consultants from Arup has led the process for the LEED for Cities Gold pre-certification, the second highest of the four levels awarded, as well as the provisional BREEAM ES Urbanism 2020 certificate.

Madrid Nuevo Norte charts a path forward for other successful, large scale sustainable urban renewal projects in Europe. We are proud to have been part of this from the very start. Through this tangible follow-up, our sustainability experts are helping to reinvent this mixed-use site, and make it an international benchmark. ” Flavio Tejada Flavio Tejada Director

These two prestigious sustainability labels assess how cities and communities embrace sustainability in their plans, development and operations to improve quality of life. LEED encompasses social, economic, and environmental performance indicators and strategies with a clear methodology for benchmarking and communicating progress. BREEAM Urbanism provides a comprehensive and internationally recognised environmental sustainability certification.

Belen Piserra, DCN's Business Director, said that "having obtained the pre-certifications in the world's most prestigious sustainability seals is the best recognition of DCN's commitment to urban sustainability and our efforts to turn Madrid Nuevo Norte into a model of sustainable urban development on an international scale".

"Having been advised by a company like Arup has undoubtedly been a determining factor in reaching this important milestone," added Piserra.
