Arup has signed a four year framework agreement with Aena, to support the airport operator with any upcoming strategic planning studies. Arup is the sole provider present in four of five lots in a contract with a potential combined value of up to €15 million.

Among the 20 international consortia involved in Aena's recent public tender, Arup was the only finalist in all four lots and the only built environment design consultant specialised on the different types of projects, including airport planning as well as urban and transport planning. For the first two lots, which cover airport and capacity planning, the firm has set up a joint venture with Navya Solutions, Spanish airspace consultant.

With this framework, Arup consolidates its solid track record in the aviation and airport planning sector and the presence in all four lots reinforces our position as one of the leading airport planning firms. Arup is proud to continue to partner with Aena, who shares a similar sustainability ambition in their work. ” Patricia Fernández Reid Patricia Fernández Reid Aviation Business Leader at Arup in Spain

Under the bid, Aena can place orders for a range of services for its different airports – ranging from relatively small to large scale operations - including runway capacity studies, master plans, airport development proposals, or urban planning, among others. Under the current framework, sustainability will be one of the key driving forces for all these different projects.

The tender was issued by Spanish airport operator Aena, which manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain and has stakes in 23 other airports in Europe and the Americas. Aena is the world's leading operator in the sector in terms of passenger traffic, with almost 120 million passengers in 2021.
