Symposium – Cities in Transition: The Future is Circular

Wednesday, 27 June 2018, 10:30am to 3pm
CRCLR House, Rollbergstraße 26, 12053 Berlin

More than half of the world’s population lives in cities. By 2050, this number will have increased to two thirds. This massive urbanisation requires significant investments in buildings and infrastructure. But increasingly scarce resources are urging a change in thinking. Away from the current ‘use and discard’ mentality towards a future-oriented circular thinking: for sustainable materials that are used beyond the life-cycle of a building, for flexible architectural designs that offer a more efficient use of properties, for innovative residential and business models that enable new ways of living and working together. Cities are predestined to promote the transition to a circular economy and to benefit from the social, ecological and economic developments.

To share practical knowledge and discuss concrete proposals for solutions, Arup together with the network dieNachwachsendeStadt have organised a symposium that addresses the following topics:

Panel 1 MATERIALS & BUILDINGS will present innovative materials and construction solutions which upgrade buildings to material banks and thus allow for the recycling and upcycling of components. It will also discuss flexible architectural concepts that circular buildings are based on.

Panel 2 CITY & SOCIETY will address the circular principles and their role in urban planning and examines social, ecological and economic aspects. These include new residential and business models aiming at flexible and thus more efficient use of space and services, which will change urban planning design significantly.
