Last week the ground-breaking ceremony of the Museum of Marshal Pilsudski took place in Sulejówek, a city about 20km east of Warsaw.
The museum is a tribute to Jozef Pilsudski, recognised ‘father of Polish independence’ and founder of the Second Polish Republic in 1918. The new building will evoke the attitudes and values of this historical leader and those involved in the state-building process following the First World War.
Arup plays the role of design and project manager on this challenging task, which requires many advanced technical solutions. This includes a 55m deep thin-diaphragm wall by solidur and 20m deep excavations to place the majority of the museum’s function underground. The museum will have 100 vertical ground heat exchangers, low energy consumption and a high tech exhibition.
Polish President, Mr. Andrzej Duda, the Speaker of Polish Parliament, Mr. Marek Kuchciński, and Minister of Culture, Mr. Piotr Gliński were honoured guests at the ground-breaking ceremony. Our Group Leader in Poland, Matthew Skuse, attended the event, accompanied by members of the project team.
The museum is scheduled to open in two years’ time on the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. To get an impression of the museum, watch the video (in Polish).
