We are one of the few independent foreign registered engineering consultants in Japan, providing multidisciplinary services to help both inbound and outbound clients explore a world of opportunities, within and beyond their frontiers.

With a local office in Tokyo, Arup has been working in Japan for more than 30 years. We are one of the few independent foreign registered engineering consultants in Japan, providing multidisciplinary services to help both inbound and outbound clients explore a world of opportunities, within and beyond their frontiers.

We have worked on numerous iconic projects across the country, from the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre in Shizuoka, which pays homage to Mt. Fuji with its inverted mountain shape, to ROOFLAG – Exhibition of Rental Housing for Tomorrow, which features a spectacular triangular roof made of cross-laminated timber.

Tokyo

Tokyo has been a centre of excellence for seismic engineering by learning from experience of major earthquakes in Japan. Arup is active in seismic design development.

The firm’s most notable structures include Nicolas G Hayek Center which adopts a new seismic passive control system – the self-mass damper system, and the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, the world’s second-tallest educational building known for its expressive design and remarkable environment.

We are not only shaping ambitious buildings but, more importantly, designing buildings for better performance through building services engineering and façade engineering. We helped Coca-Cola Japan Headquarters to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the highest award for green building design; and we also delivered comfortable spaces for New Chitose Airport International Passenger Terminal Building.

Arup is unique in Japan in offering multidisciplinary design services. Our lighting design takes into account specific local circumstances and  we have extensive experience in programme and project management for projects like IKEA Tachikawa

In recent years, the office’s offerings have been expanding to planning and advisory services drawing upon a global network of expertise. These include 100 Resilient Cities, an innovative project that helps 100 member cities become more resilient to physical, social and economic challenges. We also provided transaction advice for Kansai and Osaka international airports helping global investors make informed decisions.

We live and breathe with the local community and strive to give back to society whenever we can. In the aftermath of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami with nuclear issues still going on, the Tokyo office supported architects to build a ‘Home for All’ in Soma city on a pro-bono basis a much needed communal setting for affected families to gather and raise each other’s spirit.
