Madrid

Madrid is the major financial centre of the Iberian Peninsula and plays a significant role in both the banking and industrial sectors. It has traditionally been the hub between different areas of Spain and is therefore connected to all major Spanish cities by train, road and air.

Following the completion of a number of major projects in 1992, including the Thyssen Museum in Madrid, Arup established a permanent presence in Spain in 1993. Since then, qualified engineers and staff have been working throughout all Spanish regions.

Our most important projects include Metropol Parasol in Seville; La Alhóndiga Cultural Centre in Bilbao; the Expo Zaragoza Bridge, which provided a crossing and galleries for the Expo 2008; Campus Iberdrola, a reference point in sustainability in business innovation centres; and Santander Waterfront, a masterplanning project which successfully coordinated both public and private initiatives.

Our recent projects include Health & Wellness Precinct Doha, a state-of-the-art stadium and host venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™; MEDA-MOS II, a project to boost motorways of the sea between the Middle East and the Maghreb; and Madrid+Natural, a series of guidelines to tackle climate change based on multiple local solutions. Our clients come from both the public and private sectors for civil, industrial and building projects. We have delivered a wide range of project types, from shopping centres and office designs to building upgrades and structural audits, and we have also provided technical advisory services to investment banks and financial institutions in relation to publicly funded projects, public-private partnerships (PPP), and private finance initiatives (PFI).

Adapted to the Spanish market, codes and environment, our projects are based on a holistic design vision that addresses environmental aspects, efficient use of natural resources and energy, and social implications, in addition to the economic impact.

Our office features a combined SoundLab and ExperienceLab, bringing together fully immersive audio and visual environments, where Arup delivers multi-sensory simulations of existing or unbuilt spaces, to allow project clients, collaborators, and stakeholders to make better informed design decisions.
