Coal Drops Yard – Transforming a disused industrial space into a vibrant shopping destination with high-quality public realm.

Arup was founded by Ove Arup in 1946. Today, we are 6,000 strong in the UK, working on local, national and international projects. We are a professional services firm with a focus on the built environment and we work closely and collaboratively with our clients to develop the solutions they need today – and tomorrow. We bring deep expertise in strategy, design, planning and engineering, and our project portfolio ranges from the UK Government’s heat decarbonisation programme, to the design of new cancer treatment centres and playing a central role in engineering a more resilient rail network.

Sheffield

Our Sheffield office, which has been awarded a SKA Gold rating for excellence in sustainable design and construction, stands in the heart of the city. It was the first Arup office in the UK to open outside of London in 1958.

Supporting regional growth

We are working with Sheffield City Council to help deliver the Sheffield Retail Quarter, a mixed-use redevelopment known as Heart of the City Phase 2. Here, we are providing strategic cities and digital advice alongside specialist transport, lighting, fire, and digital modelling services. More broadly, we are advising on the town and transport planning for Sheffield city region’s integrated infrastructure plan, helping to define the requirements to support future economic growth.

Working with education

Our longstanding relationships with Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield are a key element of our activity in the city. Which include the multi-award-winning, The Diamond at the University of Sheffield.

Shaping a greener city

We’re really proud of our work on the Olympic Legacy Park, formerly site of the Don Valley Stadium, where we provided multidisciplinary services including structural engineering. This extensive site was transformed to provide first-rate education, sports and leisure facilities, and has secured a future for health and wellbeing research in the city. Similarly, our specialist energy consulting role in the flagship renewable energy plant Blackburn Meadows, exemplifies our commitment to developing a greener future for the Steel City.
