Coal Drops Yard – Transforming a disused industrial space into a vibrant shopping destination with high-quality public realm.

Arup was founded by Ove Arup in 1946. Today, we are 6,000 strong in the UK, working on local, national and international projects. We are a professional services firm with a focus on the built environment and we work closely and collaboratively with our clients to develop the solutions they need today – and tomorrow. We bring deep expertise in strategy, design, planning and engineering, and our project portfolio ranges from the UK Government’s heat decarbonisation programme, to the design of new cancer treatment centres and playing a central role in engineering a more resilient rail network.

Arup’s business in Winchester has played an important role in shaping the South of England and beyond for more than 35 years. Home to more than 75 engineers, planners and specialist technical advisors, our multi-disciplinary teams provide clients with expertise in buildings, infrastructure, planning, digital, climate and sustainability, advisory services and technical consulting.

Our people in Winchester help to guide the development of towns, cities and countryside in the region – from creating a shape for future development in Winchester city centre, to designing contemporary health, care and sport centres to serve residents across the region. We work at the heart of our local communities, including partnering with the SPUD arts and education charity, to support local young people to design, plan and deliver Handlebar Café, a sustainable cycle café.

Our members work with universities, hospitals, and leading manufacturers to develop their decarbonisation plans, retrofit and build new energy-efficient facilities and accommodation, and help landowners to cultivate their estates. We’ve supported Southern Water in their work to protect and build resilience into drinking water supplies across Hampshire and taken a major housing scheme at Uplands Farm through a comprehensive planning application and enriched their estate with watercourse enhancements.
