Designing a net zero roadmap for healthcare

Climate change is already having severe impacts on our health. As a major emitter and a sector left carrying the consequences of climate change, the healthcare sector can take a leading role in tackling the issue.

Arup and Health Care without Harm have collaborated to develop a technical methodology and guidance that supports any regional and national health authority measure its carbon emissions and chart a net zero roadmap that is compatible with the principles of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The document represents a natural progression of our award-winning Health Care’s Climate Footprint Report (2019) and our highly-commended Global Roadmap for healthcare decarbonization (2021).

Developed through HCWH Europe’s Operation Zero project, this methodology has been piloted in partnership with three national and regional health authorities. It provides the process and the component parts for establishing a decarbonisation roadmap for healthcare systems, and describes the steps to calculate a carbon footprint, and model emissions trajectories.
