The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Centre marks a new beginning in the artistic and cultural life of Izmir, Türkiye. The centre consists of two concert halls and exhibition areas.
Multidisciplinary engineering team
A multidisciplinary engineering team from Arup worked closely with Tozkoparan Architects to deliver the centre. Acoustics and venue planning were an integrated part of the design from the outset, with a goal of providing world-class facilities within an affordable budget. The ground airing system is designed to leave the acoustic quality of the concert hall unaffected.
The arts centre, known as AASSM, is named after Turkish composer and musicologist Ahmed Adnan Saygun, who died in 1991. The centre incorporates a 1,100 seat concert hall, a 300 seat recital hall and visual art gallery spaces. The concert hall will host regular concerts by the Izmir State Symphony Orchestra and performers from all over the world.
Flexibility in performance arrangement
The concert hall allows flexibility in performance arrangement by means of a platform lift which can be used to extend the performance area or the seating capacity of the stalls. The lift can also be lowered to create an orchestra pit.
World-class acoustic facilities
Every detail was planned and constructed to create great acoustics in the hall. Remotely operated acoustic banners and drapes reduce reverberation, allowing the hall to host classical music, jazz, spoken word and amplified performances. Upstage panels can be rotated to reflect or absorb sound depending on the performance type. Karen Vermeiren, a Belgian soprano, says the concert hall has “one of the best acoustics in the world”.
Integrated services
Arup provided integrated services in venue planning, planning, acoustics, stage engineering, sound and communications, concert and working light systems, daylight advice in gallery spaces, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.
