Redevelopment and expansion of city art gallery

From the inception of the project, Arup’s venue planning specialists worked with the Centre for Contemporary Art to develop the brief.

The new building was designed to host a wide range of art forms, including performance-based work with demanding audio and video requirements. The technical infrastructure was designed to be expandable to cope with future demands.

The building includes two theatres. One is primarily a space for visual art and film, and the second is a fully flexible theatre space with flexible seating and variable acoustics.Access to overhead technical equipment is provided by a tension wire grid.

The CCA is a vibrant meeting place and supports a number of tenants, including writers’ groups, musicians and film makers.

The project received the 2001 Dynamic Place Award, a 2002 Civic Trust Award and a 2002 RIBA Award.
