Interxion is a European company specialized in independent data centres housing information and communication technology equipment. Their new centre in Madrid -MAD2- has been the first in the country to be awarded the LEED Gold certification.
Arup set out a sustainability strategy for the construction phase of the building and coordinated the design process to completion. Arup also provided energy efficiency consultancy and was responsible for coordinating the application process to obtain this LEED certification for the design and construction phases.
A unique data centre in Spain
Located in the technology business district near the city center, this 4,000m2 building was built to meet the requirements of diverse TIC companies.
The data centre makes use of redundant cooling and power systems and has advanced security and monitoring systems. It was built to cope with a high-density environment and was designed using energy efficient modular architecture, including free-cooling,component systems and maximum efficiency management standards.
Arup not only helped obtain the LEED Gold certification, but also used sustainable technology in order to achieve energy eficiency without interfering with the safety criteria of the building. These criteria included sustainable management, construction and energy issues.
In order to develop these functions, Arup relied on energy modelling tools, water consumption calculations and natural lighting.
