Extending the coverage of service for Kwun Tong Line

This project is an extension of the existing Kwun Tong line, Hong Kong’s first mass transit line opened in 1979.

The 2.4km underground extension from Yau Ma Tei has an intermediate station at Ho Man Tin with the new terminus located at Whampoa. Ho Man Tin station is interchange with the Tuen Ma Line of Shatin to Central Link and is integrated with a high-end residential property development being promoted by the MTR Corporation.

The stations, along with their entrances, are particularly challenging due to their location, topography and ground conditions, with soft ground and rock excavation as well as man-made obstacles such as dockyard walls and existing foundations. Tunnelling will be through mixed ground - likely dominated by the need for rock excavation.

Arup was appointed by the MTR Corporation as the lead consultant for this multidisciplinary commission – including full architectural input. This was followed by a separate contract from the Hong Kong government’s Transport Department to undertake the ‘Study on impact of Kwun Tong line extension’.
