Developing an efficient, flexible transport system can help an area flourish, promoting the physical and economic integration of the area and allowing for the seamless flow of people and goods.
In a bid to encourage cooperation and improve trade with the Mediterranean basin countries, the European Union rolls out consultancy programmes to provide technical advice to its neighbouring countries, furthering regional integration.
Bringing closer together the Mediterranean basin was the main driver behind the European Commission’s Mediterranean Motorway of the Sea (MoS) programme. Launched in November 2010, the Meda-MoS II aims to introduce an integrated transport network to deliver a sustainable logistics chain integrating road transport, rail, maritime links as well as inland waterways.
Under the technical assistance framework eight neighbouring countries throughout the Mediterranean, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Palestine benefitted from technical and strategic advice.
This consultancy work involved the development of 21 pilot projects in the different neighbouring countries, defining a framework for an environmental programme, the implementation of environmental management systems in ports, and the design of the transport master plan for the entire Meda region.

Integration and awareness
Our consultancy work has helped further integrate the Mediterranean basin motorways into the European transport networks. Our work has also helped deliver another important outcome: raising awareness of the importance of the location and interconnectivity of logistics platforms, ports and maritime transport services, and ensuring that this is appropriately reflected in national strategy and policy documents.
Arup's work has helped improve the flow of trade and logistics, reducing the impact of bottlenecks hindering maritime and intermodal traffic flows. In addition, a master plan and roadmap for the integration of MEDA Motorways of the Sea into TMT-N was developed.
