The MODE GAKUEN Cocoon Tower is a 204m tall, 50-storey educational building - the second tallest of its kind in the world.
Arup provided structural engineering services to the project, throughout the design and construction phases.
Home to three vocational schools of fashion design, computer technology and medical care, it serves 10,000 students in total, stimulating their professional development so that they eventually emerge like butterflies from a cocoon.
A typical floor has three rectangular classrooms rotating 120 degrees around the inner core. Between the classrooms is a triple-height atrium, providing space for relaxation, communication and creativity.
The distinctive cocoon shape
The iconic building’s expressive design has attracted wide public interest. Even during its construction, many photographs of its development were posted on the Internet. The structure's aesthetic excellence and functional design have also been recognised by the industry. In 2008, it was awarded as "Skyscraper of the Year" by Emporis.
