Renovation of one of the most admired and visited European painting collections in the world

Prado National Museum is the main Spanish national art museum located in Madrid. El Prado is one of the most visited sites in the world, considered to be among the greatest museums of art. The large number of works by El Greco, Goya, Tiziano Rubens and El Bosco are among the highlights of the collection.

The building designed by Juan de Villanueva was inaugurated in 1819 and nowadays gathers one of the best collections of paintings of the European masters of the sixteenth to nineteenth century.

A holistic approach

In 1994, Arup carried out concept design commissioned by the President of the Royal Patronage of El Prado, for the replacement of the roof of the Villanueva building, including studies of new materials for the roof, natural lighting and environmental control in the areas under the roof.

Afterwards, we developed a strategic review of the existing security system and the conceptual design of a new one, including fire protection. The team also carried out an analysis and recommendations for the system of natural and artificial lighting proposed as part of the renovation of the roof; including a detailed 3D study of the prestigious Velázquez Hall.

We had the opportunity to work for a prestigious public institution that trusted us to resolve a problem that it had had for many years. The roof of Prado National Museum was one of the first projects in which we could really apply our holistic approach and offer a comprehensive solution. ” Tudor Salusbury Tudor Salusbury Netherlands Group Leader
