For over 40 years, Joop van Caldenborgh has collected art from various periods, styles and disciplines. The art collector, who owns the largest private art collection in the Netherlands, has decided to display his 'Caldic Collection' in a new museum in the garden of the Voorlinden Estate's premises.
Largest private art collection
Designed in close collaboration with museum owner, Joop van Caldenborgh and Kraaijvanger Architects, the newly built museum building displays his collection of contemporary art through a modern yet classical building with symmetrical shape and generous dimensions.
We combined our local multidisciplinary knowledge with our international daylight experience, aiming to reach the highest architectural and museological standards. We were responsible for the lighting design, fire engineering, acoustics, mechanical and electrical engineering and building physics.
Daylighting
Given the constraints of art conservation, the maximum possible natural light is used, flowing in through the roof. The natural light indirectly falls inward through 115,000 angled cut tubes located over the entire roof. A velum and transparent glass roof, which includes indirect led light, ensure a well-dosed light on the art on both sunny days and at night, in every season.
The ground floor features a canopy, preventing the displayed art from the sun beams in summer. The external sunshading grid keeps the solar warmth outside, minimising the need for cooling.
Serene atmosphere
The artefacts can get undivided attention as the duct work and the ventilation systems are assimilated invisibly. The acoustic design was made to minimise the sound as much as possible, especially in the exhibition rooms, connecting the serene atmosphere in the rooms to the natural tranquility outside.
As well as the exhibition rooms, the program includes a museum shop and meeting places on terraces. The restaurant is located in the historic villa on the premises.
