With the future firmly in mind, Perth Airport committed to a AUD$1B redevelopment and consolidation plan which will see all commercial air services relocated to one operating precinct, Airport Central, offering a world-class airport experience.
At the end of 2015, Perth Airport unveiled the single largest element of Airport Central – the AUD$200 million Terminal 1 Domestic facility which is now home to Virgin Australia.
T1 Domestic was a considerable step-change for Perth Airport and by using a collaborative approach for the design process, Arup successfully delivered a number of first’s at the Airport.
The final design delivered a number of exciting firsts for Perth Airport including a combined international and domestic service offering at T1, two A380 gates, the introduction of cutting-edges self-service technology and the ability for passengers to transfer seamlessly between regional, interstate and international services in one convenient location.
The expansion of the Terminal 1 building required complex interfaces with the existing building and construction in operational areas. Arup designed the new areas as a seamless expansion of the building ensuring a consistent appearance.
In addition to playing a critical role in design leadership, Arup provided transport planning, aviation planning, structural and civil engineering, blast and security, façade and acoustics design and site supervision.
Arup’s design leadership advice (delivered in conjunction with architect Woods Bagot) also assisted the interface of concurrent adjacent projects and ensured the existing terminal remained operational.
Better connecting Western Australia with the world
In addition to delivering a number of exciting firsts, T1 Domestic improves the passenger experience and supports Perth Airport’s vision to transform the airport into and international gateway.
T1 Domestic’s 200m long pier sits at the western end of the Terminal 1. It is designed to cater for wide-bodied domestic A330 aircraft and includes:
- 14 domestic check-in counters using Virgin Australia's new self-service technology
- Domestic passengers security screening zone
- New premium guest lounge
- 12 new aerobridge gates (Code C, MARS, Code C/E and Code F)
- Two large baggage reclaims belts
- Airside link bridge to Terminal 2 for connecting regional flights
Passengers enter T1 Domestic’s pier via a 50m link serviced by dual travelators, which lead to a spacious departures area where a retail, food and beverage hub is located.
T1 Domestic uses innovative features to reduce energy consumption, particularly in relation to thermal and solar performance and the ‘building envelope’. The building façade has external shading panels and skylights to reduce solar heat while maximising the use of natural light. In addition, T1 Domestic has energy efficient lighting with automatic dimming, temperature control measures in spaces not always occupied, and travelators and escalators activated by motion sensors.
