Sands Macao, Macau

The first American-operated gaming facility in Macau.

Venetian Sands is the first American-operated gaming facility to open in Macau. It was designed to appeal to the growing tourism market in the territory, recreating the glitter and glamour of Las Vegas while adding a unique oriental atmosphere, in keeping with the culture of the region.

The eight-storey building includes a large gambling hall, two smaller casinos, three VIP suites, seven restaurants and other amenities. There is also planning permission for a future hotel extension to be added to the site.

Arup provided full engineering services for this casino, from design through to construction. The whole project was completed in only 16 months, despite the fact that the programme of work included land reclamation, as the proposed site was under water at high tide.

There were challenges right from the start. Because of the soft marine mud, the Arup team had to alter the pile-driving sequence to minimise the mudflow. In addition, the deep tidal pile on which the building sits was pre-cast off site. This enabled Arup to reduce costs during the land reclamation work.
