Fire safety for one of the biggest airports in the world

Schiphol is one of the biggest airports in the world. To keep up with the increasing safety demands, Arup was asked to come up with a fire safety plan for the public area called 'Schiphol Plaza'. This area ties the airport terminals, the shopping centre, the public transport hub (including an underground train station) and parking facilities together.

The new plan combines the existing facilities and geometry with the new smoke extract system, enabling efficient evacuation and breaking up the area into various smoke zones. This plan strengthens safety, but with low impact for the flow of passengers and shoppers, the architecture and the busines continuity of the airport as a whole.

Arup is also supporting Schiphol in fine-tuning and implementing the plan aligned with all the local authorities, insurance and other involved parties.
