The Valsequillo region of Mexico is rich in tradition, cultural variety and biodiversity. Its main attraction – Lake Valsequillo – was built to supply water to the irrigation districts located in the southeast of the territory.
In recent years, deforestation and water pollution has damaged the natural surroundings of the reservoir. Communities adjacent to the dam have also lost sources of economic livelihood such as fishing and tourism.
Strategy
Local authorities began a comprehensive policy to improve the current environmental conditions. Arup was appointed to prepare a sustainable development strategy, plus an urban and environmental development plan of this area and its hinterland.
Methodology
Through workshops with key public and private stakeholders, Arup was able to integrate a common vision and set parameters to mitigate the environmental;impact.
Arup’s intervention provided solutions that reduced the consumption of energy and water, reduced the discharge of sewage into the lake, planned for an efficient and clean public transport and promoted those urban areas already established. The strategic plan will also benefit technological innovation and job creation.
Implementation
Thanks to this project, Valsequillo can be named as an example of climate change adaptation and even be able to reduce the economic risks of doing nothing by 35%.
To incorporate important sustainability ideas into this project, Arup created a concept called “V3” which stands for three values:
Green: respect and enhance natural resources of the territory.
Livable: develop everything for everyone, the main beneficiaries will be the inhabitants of Valsequillo area.
Valued: value natural resources that generate wealth for the population, diversify the economy, create opportunities and balance the territory of Puebla.
