Vegesack Harbour Bridge, Bremen

Bridge design with a unique opening mechanism

STAVE Stadtentwicklung Vegesack, a company responsible for the development of the district Vegesack in Bremen, commissioned a bascule footbridge for the new marina near the former Lürssen shipyard. It connects the old and new parts of Vegesack and spans the harbour entrance to the River Weser.

We provided structural engineer for the design of this 42-metre steel bridge. The opening mechanism is unique: by pressing a button, the movable part of the superstructure flaps up into an almost vertical position by means of two open spiral cables. Two dampers are holding the bridge via suction as means of added safety.
