The Port of Barcelona is a major logistics hub for Spain, and the wider Mediterranean region, dealing with both cargo and passenger traffic.
Arup was appointed to provide transport planning, railway consultancy and specialist modelling for the preliminary stages of the conceptual design for a new freight rail terminal.
The design of the new rail freight terminal needed to allow for the handling of over 1,500,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) each year.
Arup’s role on the project was to undertake a ‘market / demand study’ which involved:

An analysis of leading container terminals in Europe and North America;

Designing concepts for the layout of the new terminal, based on the operational and management models created;

Operational and access-side analysis of various usage scenarios to model optimal capacity.
Arup brought together a global team of planners, designers and operations consulting experts from its offices in Madrid (Spain), Solihull (UK) and Sydney (Australia) to deliver the project.
Arup’s client, GPO Ingeniería, S.A., was responsible for all engineering aspects of terminal’s development.
