Great design means cities that work for everyone

Great design means cities that work for everyone

The world’s most thriving cities have a few things in common. Shared urban and green spaces. Clean air and accessible public transport. Inclusive policy making and a commitment to health and wellbeing. A sense that a city belongs to all its people.

As a global team of architects, urban designers and landscape experts, our human-centred approach has been influencing the fabric of our cities for decades. Our teams work on every kind of project, from designing new public realms to bold urban greening schemes, from commercial buildings to much-loved cultural facilities.

Our approach to placemaking is to enhance liveability, strengthen community resilience and enable sustainable economic growth in developed and developing cities. Everything we do is underpinned by a focus on the social value our work might produce.

As designers, we believe everyone has the right to a beautifully designed, socially inclusive built and natural environment. Our work in cities proves it’s possible.” Theresa Yeung Theresa Yeung East Asia Cities, Planning and Design Leader

How we can help

Masterplanning and urban design

Our masterplanning team helps city leaders to approach urban development with confidence, from definition of scheme goals, through public consultation, building or landscape design and implementation.

Architecture

We design buildings and places that are purposeful, simple, efficient and beautiful. These four priorities help us to shape all sorts of city buildings, from schools to bridges to metro stations or concert halls. Whatever the project, our design is fundamentally informed by a commitment to community needs and sustainable development principles.

Explore new scenarios

In the competitive spatial context of modern cities, landscape architecture has never been more important. Our approach is to always prioritise solutions that enhance biodiversity and liveability at the same time. Landscape architecture can transform the urban experience at the project or neighbourhood level.

Accessible and inclusive environments

It’s vital to ensure that everyone, whatever their age and ability, can navigate and participate in their city. Our Accessible and Inclusive Environments team helps to ensure that facilities can accommodate the widest range of cognitive, mobility and sensory requirements.

International development

In the international development context, our teams provide their expertise on a variety of urban priorities. These range from developing cities’ lack of housing, access to clean water or much needed transport connectivity. We also work with partners to improve cities’ resilience to the growing risks posed by climate change.
