Sports architecture

Working alongside Alpine and Herzog de Meuron Architects, Arup provided a sports architecture services for Munich's Allianz Arena, home to FC Bayern München and TSV 1860.

Arup is developing this iconic piece of architecture combining exemplary environmental strategies with rigorous structural engineering, to create a building unlike any other tennis stadium in the world.

Elegant, respectful and versatile, the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia combines traditional Islamic architecture with innovative design to form a highly functional, sustainable and flexible building.

Arup designed this stadium as a legacy for Manchester that is viable, iconic, and a catalyst for regeneration. Built as the focal point for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and now home to Manchester City F.C.

This award-winning 31,000-seat rectangular stadium is the result of collaboration between Arup and Cox Architecture. We used 3D modelling to streamline the design process, including using Generative Component (GC) software to prepare parametric models to define the roof structure.

Designed by Arup’s specialist sport architects, the the Donbass Arena is the first ever UEFA five-star stadium in Ukraine reflects the FC Shakhtar's stature as one of the powerhouses of Ukrainian football.

Arup developed a unique architectural concept for Baku Sports City including a landmark building integrating hockey stadium and wrestling arena with an internal 'street'. The primary aim for this project is to deliver a 21st century sporting community for Azerbaijan's National Hockey and Wrestling Foundations.

The 'Birds Nest' formed the striking centre piece of Beijing's Olympic Games. Its location in one of the world's most active seismic zones allied to the 'crazed pottery' style required the use of advanced design and analysis tools to deliver this iconic stadium.

Arup played a major role in helping Lima deliver the Games. This included providing technical design assurance for 14 new sports venues and the Athletes’ Village and leading the operational planning and overlay design for all the competition and non-competition venues.

The London 2012 Olympic Games had a commitment to being the 'greenest games'. Arup established a full time sustainability team within the design team to help the Olympic Delivery Authority achieve its goals.

Located in Ørestad, between Copenhagen City Centre and Kastrup Airport, this new multipurpose indoor arena forms a local, regional and international centre for entertainment, cultural and sporting events, acting as a key driver for economic development.

The First Direct Arena is a world class music venue seating 13,500 people. Arup redefined and renegotiated the acoustic design criteria and created a solution that would help reduce breakout of noise, as well as helping the venue ensure the highest BREEAM score.

Arup designed the 6,000m2 sports facility, which includes an eight court sports hall, multipurpose halls for dance and martial arts, squash courts, a fitness suite, weights room, and fives courts.

Utilising our experience in sport and stadium design in particular, The Abacus Stadium seat was designed by Arup to deliver a balance of performance, style and value.

Working alongside Arata Isozaki and Archa, Arup won an open competition to design a new ice hockey stadium for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Designed to accommodate 12,500 spectators during the games, this capacity can be increased for flexible post-Olympic use.
