Powerful pedestrian simulation software from Arup

Commuters, shoppers, audiences, cyclists, pedestrians... as designers, we build for a world in motion. Whether it’s a new railway station, shopping mall or cultural landmark, understanding how people move, behave and interact is a vital part of the design process. MassMotion makes this level of insight possible.

Developed in-house by Arup, MassMotion is the world’s most flexible pedestrian and crowd simulation software. Based on pioneering research into the science of human movement and refined by data from real world projects, the software provides technical analysis of people’s movement through physical spaces. It allows our planners and engineers to test these designs, population levels, and operational overlays from a human perspective.

We built a detailed 3D simulation model in a collision avoidance environment to fully assess the proposed performance of Taoyuan International's Terminal 3. Passenger journey was visualised and designed in detailed.

Integration

MassMotion is fully 3D, integrates with BIM tools, and has been used to help design and plan iconic projects at various scales: from airports such as Beijing Daxing Airport to unique cultural events such as The Mile Long Opera. As a design tool, MassMotion works best as a combination of digital platform plus human insight, both elements working together to unlock its full potential for clients. This ethos underpins digital development at Arup.

Designing for humans

As the world continues to urbanise, understanding how people flow through spaces is incredibly valuable. Our transport planning, fire engineering, and user experience experts use MassMotion in many sectors to ensure smooth and efficient movement of people in rail stations, airport terminals, and popular public spaces.

Toronto's Union Station. We used MassMotion software to predict the success of the proposed changes to the station with regards to efficient pedestrian movements.

It’s a fundamental tool in our human-centred design approach: combining design expertise and local city knowledge with advanced technology. And we continuously refine MassMotion to ensure it reflects the developing needs of our clients.

Modelling socially distant operations

In today’s post-COVID-19 world we face a unique challenge: how to restart a densely populated, highly social world. MassMotion has been upgraded to allow clients to implement social distance policies into the operations of their buildings and facilities.

MassMotion’s insights are helping to define safe, effective, commercially viable operations, keeping business running until the pandemic fully subsides. New proximity analysis features allow users to test mitigation scenarios by quantifying how long people will likely spend within a set proximity (e.g. 2m) from each other.

The latest version of MassMotion comes with additional, experimental behavioural modes, that enable our teams and our clients to test a wider variety of physical distancing scenarios, vital insights as organisations attempt to chart a safe path back to normal operations.

Understand scenarios for back to work: quantify the impact on elevator strategies, lobby queuing systems, and building population limits.

Through Space Explorer, we are using MassMotion to help employers optimise their workplaces to reflect the new realities of a COVID-19 world. Able to work from the specifics of a site, be it an office, laboratory or any other space where people congregate, the tool can identify areas of risk and aid the adoption of best practices to ensure safety.
