AI and machine learning (ML) is already being deployed within the energy sector, helping to bring operationally predictive and behavioural insights into the management of both energy generation and consumption. Given the insatiable growth in cities’ demand for electricity, taking advantage of AI/ML’s intelligence is vital if a more complex mix of regenerative energy sources are also becoming part of the urban power grid.
Building on insights from Arup’s own specialists and experts from the National Energy Systems Operator (NESO), this report aims to help decision makers to understand how AI tools and approaches can produce real value for energy hungry urban populations.
It combines thought-provoking challenges with informed speculations about the future and cutting-edge case studies of today.
Artificial Intelligence holds great promise but what does this mean for the way cities are planned, designed, built and managed? Each issue of AI for Future Cities provides futures-thinking perspectives, expert insights, accessible trend analysis and cutting-edge case studies on the use of artificial intelligence and its impact on future cities. Future editions of the AI for Future Cities series will focus on the implications of the technology for water, nature, the circular economy and workplaces.
In the first issue of the AI for Future Cities series, we explore how AI might transform our cities and redefine the roles of urban planners and designers.
