The built environment sector has long embraced digital innovation – to enhance creativity, explore a wider range of design implications and organise work more efficiently. The new generation of AI tools clearly holds incredible promise for professional service workers, but how are these tools being employed in the real world?
This Arup global survey of architects, engineers, planners and digital officers from 10 countries (Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Singapore, the UK, and the US) explores these and related questions.
We wanted to profile how often people use AI, what they use it for, and how they feel about future applications of the technology in the built environment sector. Survey respondents also reported using AI for a wide range of uses that go far beyond administrative support to complex analytics and design.
Our survey reveals strong demand for faster and more purposeful development of the AI system that addresses real-world needs – but this requires urgent, increased support from governments, tech firms, finance, and the sector itself.
