Appointment for Central Kowloon Route

16 August 2011

A Joint Venture of Arup and Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Highways Department of Hong Kong SAR Government for the proposed Central Kowloon Route in Hong Kong.

As a 50:50 partnership, the JV will provide full detailed design consultancy and construction supervision services for the highway and tunnel project.

The scheme will comprise a dual 3-lane east-west trunk road across central Kowloon of approximately 5 km length. It will connect the West Kowloon Highway at Yau Ma Tei Interchange with the road network at Kowloon Bay and the future Trunk Road T2 at Kai Tak Development, which in turn will connect to the future Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel. The works will include two major interchanges, cut-and-cover tunnels, building reprovisioning, a section of underwater tunnel and a 3.9 km-long rock tunnel.

Commenting on this success KM Yeung, Managing Director of Mott MacDonald Hong Kong said, "This highway and tunnel scheme will be a strategic part of Hong Kong's Route 6 highway network and will be key to relieving traffic congestion in Kowloon." He added that "we are delighted to be involved in this major new highway and are looking forward to working with Highways Department to deliver this prestigious project."

Arup Director and East Asia highways business leader David Pegg said, "We are delighted to win another major infrastructure project in Hong Kong," and added, "With proven experience in managing mega projects, we are uniquely placed to deliver this strategic highway that will maximise social and economic benefits with positive impact on the daily lives of the local community."

Arup and Mott MacDonald have been working together successfully on several recent projects and individually each company has a substantial track record in major highway and tunnel projects in Hong Kong, Asia and around the world.
