Arup has been awarded the design contract for the Sumners Road interchange upgrade, located 2km north of the Ipswich Motorway. The appointment builds on a history of over 30 years providing support to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) in the Brisbane Metropolitan region.

With vehicle numbers reaching 35,000 per day, the interchange contains two of the busiest road connections in Brisbane’s south west and provides access to several large residential and industrial catchments. These existing high traffic volumes result in significant queueing and lengthy delays for vehicles.

Arup's design will include a second bridge over the Centenary Highway and signalised intersections to replace the existing roundabouts.

The upgrade will deliver significant road network benefits including efficiency and reliability for freight, commuter and public transport users, as well as numerous safety benefits.

Construction is expected to begin late 2018.
