The ‘Arup Design Programme’ is a creative, engaging and inspiring work experience programme focused on giving students insight into the day-to-day life of engineers, designers and consultants working within the built and natural environment. The week is aimed at 14-17-year-old students with over 250 young people participating in the programme since 2010 across Arup’s Leeds and Manchester offices. Since 2022, the programme has been run as a wider North West & Yorkshire cohort, bringing in Arup’s Sheffield, Liverpool and Whitehaven offices.

Arup members work closely with individuals and groups, to challenge and advise students and share their knowledge first-hand; whilst giving autonomy and building confidence by encouraging them to assess the potential impact of their decision making. This hands-on and immersive experience allows students to apply the knowledge they gain to practice engineering and design solutions for a real-world scenario.

Why the Arup Design Programme?

An inclusive, hybrid programme which aims to inspire students who may not already be considering a STEM career; as well as those with a strong interest in the built and natural environment; students will:

  • Learn first-hand from leading professionals working in a range of disciplines.

  • Explore and practice new skills in a supportive and fun environment with lots of interaction.

  • Build confidence and develop soft skills such as timekeeping, communication, teamwork.

Applications for 2024 are live from 24 January. The deadline for applications is Friday 29th March 2024. Spaces are limited and the programme is often over-subscribed, so please apply as soon as possible.
