Arup has started a rail business in Japan with Alberto Battois as the business leader.

This follows Japan’s decision to invest heavily in rail infrastructure and a number of key projects Arup has undertaken with Japanese clients across Southeast Asia, including the Red Line in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1, and two lines in Singapore.

Alberto, who has been transferred from Arup’s Singapore office to Tokyo to build the new team and business, said: “Japanese rail and infrastructure players have an incredible wealth of experience to share with the world. We are here to help them implement their vast knowledge with the world for the benefit of the whole global rail industry. To do that we will bring in the engineering excellence Arup is famous for, and for which we believe to be right partner for this industry.”

I am delighted that Alberto’s much-awaited transfer to Japan will help us better serve the Japanese clients who are active overseas given the Government’s policy for the infrastructure system export. Familiar with both the European and Japanese rail industries and business practices, Alberto will build and lead a dynamic team of unique skill sets to advise rail operators, engineers, contractors and suppliers on the cross-border opportunities. ”

In close collaborating with Arup’s global offices, the newly formed rail team will provide rail engineering on both infrastructure and systems as well as advisory services.

With a client-based approach on all the key players active globally, the Japan rail team will deliver work involving Japanese companies and technology with strong support from the Arup’s global rail network. ”

Alberto brings around 20 years of global experience in rail engineering and consulting, of which almost 10 were closely involved with the Japanese rail industry. He started his career in Italy as a signalling systems engineer, and since then he has been working in many countries including Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. He joined Arup in 2016 to lead the Singapore Rail Systems team.
